OUTBACK QUEENSLAND: JUMP-UPS, VAST PLAINS & HISTORY

While most people stick to the coast, the real heart of the state is found further west. Outback Queensland offers a different pace of travel—one defined by 4WD tracks, ancient landscapes, vast skies and wide-open spaces.

Here is an overview of the regions and parks that make the interior worth the drive.

OUTBACK QUEENSLAND AT A GLANCE

Best Time: April to September (unless you want to melt or get bogged in black soil)
The Map: The vast interior west of the Great Dividing Range, including the Gulf Savannah and Far North
The Standouts: Porcupine Gorge, Currawinya and the Channel Country
Access: Mostly high-clearance 4WD territory; expect gravel, dust and very little bitumen
Supplies: Fill up at every chance; carry 5L of water per person/per day and at least one spare tyre
Highlights: Jump-up country, settler history and more kangaroos than humans

ESSENTIAL GEAR FOR THE INTERIOR

I usually pack for dust, long grass and limited supplies in this part of the state.

Essential Outback Gear

🦺 Safety: Starlink is great for the campsite, but a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) is what you need if you have to leave the vehicle or all batteries die. It’s a portable fail-safe that doesn’t rely on phone signal or a clear view for a dish.
🚜 Recovery: Essential for the sandy tracks and black, gooey soil common in the interior. Maxtrax recovery boards provide immediate traction when you’re bogged and save you a lot of unnecessary digging in the heat.
🗺️ Navigation: Digital maps are fine until your tablet overheats or you lose GPS sync on a vast plain. A physical Hema paper map gives you a better sense of station tracks and terrain than a small screen can manage.
Note: This list contains affiliate links. If you buy through them, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only recommend gear I’ve actually used out on the road!
