OUTDOOR ADVENTURES: NATIONAL PARKS, HIKES & ROAD TRIPS

I’m not a hardcore hiker or a technical 4WDer. I’m a hiker in my 40s who deals with a few health constraints and has a very healthy dose of skepticism for anything over-hyped.

For me, being outdoors is more about the peace and quiet, the natural environment, the history and the national parks—it’s not about racking up kilometres or testing the limits of a vehicle. We’re mostly interested in finding the spots that are actually worth the effort—and getting there in one piece.

Whether it’s a short walk on the coast or a remote national park that requires more planning, these are the resources I’ve put together from our travels.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES AT A GLANCE

The Focus: National parks are our go-to places, from busy Southeast QLD favourites to remote desert spots
Values: Scenery, hiking, history, camping and the actual destination over clocking up kilometres
Realities: Managing my health constraints with a dose of scepticism—no marketing fluff here
Road Access: 2WD scenic drives and 4WD remote tracks—it’s about the natural spots and a bit of adventure
Wildlife: Sharing the natural environment respectfully; from sea lions to birdlife, I love watching wildlife
Gear: Only recommending the equipment that we actually use and love after years and years
Why we do it: Simply to explore Australia and beyond—and because the outdoors are our happy place
