GOLD COAST: RAINFOREST, WATERFALLS & RUGGED PEAKS

This is the green behind the gold—a massive stretch of ancient Gondwana rainforest, sharp volcanic peaks and some of the most reliable waterfall chasing in the state. While most people stick to the coastline, the real reward is up in the ranges, where the air is cooler and the tracks get significantly more rugged.

It’s a region that spans from the well-groomed trails of the National Parks to the messy, river-crossing reality of the 4WD tracks further inland. Plan for steep gradients and quick-changing mountain weather!

GOLD COAST & SCENIC RIM AT A GLANCE

Access: Sealed to Gold Coast National Parks, mostly unsealed in the Scenic Rim; 4WD-only for the river roads and tracks
Supplies: Stock up in Canungra, Boonah or Beaudesert. Mountain weather changes fast, so pack accordingly.
Highlights: Gondwana rainforests, massive waterfalls and rugged volcanic peaks

GEAR FOR THE RAINFOREST AND VOLCANIC PEAKS

A few items I generally have in my pack for the rainforest trails and mountain weather.

Gold Coast & Scenic Rim Essentials

🌧️ Rain & Wind: The hinterland is notorious for sudden mountain mists. My Patagonia Torrentshell 3L is great for rain but also works as a windbreaker on exposed lookouts. It handles humidity well and is easy to throw in your pack.
🦯 Stability: With steep, slippery tracks in Lamington and Main Range, Black Diamond Trekking Poles help keep you upright on the way down. These are lightweight and foldable, so you can tuck them away when the track levels out.
💧 Hydration: Staying hydrated is super important for long circuits like Warrie or Coomera. I use an Osprey 2L Hydration Bladder with Pure Electrolytes. They taste good, work well and have no nasty chemicals.
Note: This list contains affiliate links. If you buy through them, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only recommend gear I’ve actually used out on the road!
